Your birding trip was wonderful, you saw most of our special birds, even photos were taken! Of all the birds you mentioned and the locations you visited this is exactly the list you were supposed to produce!

In Liwonde from October to 25th January we have been seeing Blacksmith and Spur-winged Lapwings inter-breeding even producing offspring! Their previous offspring (hybrid) also bred with Spur-winged Lapwing at Skimmer Bank south of Mvuu Camp and Lodge. I am glad in Nyika you managed to see my favourite bird - the Bar-tailed Trogon!

Zomba Forests indeed need to be conserved, I also saw a big tree used as a nesting site for Black Sparrowhawk cut down.

Yours in Conservation,

Samuel Lenard Chihana.

Mike - cool writeup... left me wanting some more images though!

I looked back at some of my own images going back to 1996 and pretty much every year since. I found some from June 2003 where I walked out into what is the middle of Zib Lagoon and it was pretty much dry then as well... just some hippos slogging in mud out there.

While at Savuti this past year (July and again in December) I actually photographed some hippos in the channel near a fallen tree just downstream from Savuti Camp. I have images of what were then the two remaining cheetah brothers (Savuti Boys) lying in the shade of that same tree in May 2008.

Surely a dynamic place!

Interesting story Grant, and good image of the dogs confronting in the river. My understanding is that its extremely rare for inter-pack conflicts to end in deaths. Have you given Tico the details of this encounter?

Thanks for the update on the lioness with the injured paw. When we saw her in the second week of October, it looked like bad odds for her survival.

Great to see the cubs out and about now. Let's hope they survive the rains.

Just to let you know that just before leaving the Busanga Plains there was a fantastic effort by the Zambia Wildlife Authority and the injured Lioness is now under treatment and so far it is looking good. A small case and of course saving one lioness doesn't change teh bigger picture that much - but it proves there is a real will here to safeguard and protect our wildlife. Updates on the story will be on the Shumba camp FB page linked above as we hope the recovery and release back into the Busanga Plains goes as we hope!

Thanks to Dana Allen for the first picture! Good luck follows him around - so I would recommend booking him if you want great opportunities as well as to improve your photography skills. For those that don't know him he is a very talented wildlife photographer based in Zimbabwe and a frequent visitor to Wilderness camps as a trip leader as well as taking pictures for Wilderness. He has a cracking book on South Luangwa if you can find it - with some of the best photographs I have ever seen.
